Gritty Layers of Color: Depicting a Dystopian World

In today's post, accompanied by the videos linked at the bottom, we invite you to discover an effortless method of creating a captivating cityscape with multiple layers. Explore the haunting depths of "Dystopian Veil" as we delve into a world of urban decay through the interplay of layers and colors. Embark on this journey through gritty landscapes and join the urgent call for environmental awareness.

Designing and Printing the Skylines.

The journey begins in Photoshop with the design of the skylines. If you find this step challenging, simply use the marquee tool to create various rectangles, varying their widths and heights, and experiment with angled tops. Alternatively, tracing over an existing skyline is also an option. Next, print out four city skyline silhouettes using a laser printer for optimal results; inkjet printing won't suffice for this technique.

Individual Layering and Pulling Prints.

After laying down and printing a background layer of yellow, the artist meticulously applies acrylic paint onto the gel plate, followed by the printout. The paint adheres to the white, non-printed parts of the paper, leaving behind the skyline silhouette on the gel plate. After allowing it to dry for approximately 15 minutes, a layer of acrylic gel medium is added, enabling the skyline to be further transferred onto the print. This process is repeated for each layer, adding depth and complexity to the composition. Each new skyline layer is darker than the previous with the final layer being black.

A Message of Environmental Awareness

Beyond the artistic technique, "Dystopian Veil" carries a powerful message—an urgent call for environmental awareness. Through the portrayal of a heavily polluted world, viewers are prompted to reflect upon the consequences of pollution and the fragility of our ecosystems. The intentionally dirty gel plate provides a gritty texture, while the fading colors serve as a poignant reminder of the destructive impact of human activity. It's an invitation to contemplate the importance of sustainable practices and the preservation of our planet.
