Crafting a 'Meh'sterpiece

(Words are sometimes hard, so there's a video linked at the bottom of this post to make things easier).

Where traditional vases whisper elegance, I dared to bring a touch of irreverent artistry. Picture an orb of bright yellow adorned with an array of sculpted and carved non-smiling face emojis. This isn't just pottery; it's a journey through crafted chaos, where each element plays a part in an unconventional symphony of creativity.

From Oops to Orb

The journey began with a delightful mishap—a beautiful long necked vase, or at least it would have been. I lost the top while throwing and was able to salvage the already bulbous bottom, making into a wonderful spherical shape.

Crafted Chaos in Every Layer

Inspired by Randall Flagg’s pin in the TV adaption of "The Stand," the vase evolved into a crowd of faces! Sculpted and carved circles formed the foundation for an array of cantankerous bastards. But this wasn't just sculpting; it was a dance of addition and removal, crafting three layers of these expressions. Once bone-dry, I covered the entire outside of the vase in a yellow underglaze, and the inside in black. Then it was off to be bisque fired.

Enhancing Depth

With the sculpted faces in place, the drama unfolded. A slathering of black underglaze, followed by a careful wipe, and the black had nestled into the crevices, each face gaining a distinctive allure. The play of black against yellow added a dimension of depth, enhancing the piece's grittiness.

A Glossy Conclusion

The next act saw a brush-on application of clear glaze. Fired in the kiln, the glaze transformed from bright green to a clear, glossy finish, magnifying the vibrant hues of the piece. The result? A 'Meh'sterpiece I call “Yellowed Sentiments”.
