Bridging Time: Revitalizing Copyright-Free Images

In this blog, and the accompanying video linked at the end, I'll take you on a fascinating journey of creating "Not Alone," a haunting monoprint that breathes new life into antique images using Photoshop and the Gel Plate.

Unlocking the Treasures of the British Library's Flickr Account

Discover the hidden gems within the vast collection of open domain images from the British Library. These images are available for public use, with expired copyright or no copyright protection. As an artist, you have the incredible opportunity to explore and incorporate these historical visuals into your own creations.

Discovering the Elements: Unveiling Hidden Treasures

I embark on a quest through the depths of the British Library's Flickr account (an hours long journey) where hidden treasures awaited. I carefully selected a hooded figure, a scraggly cat, and a delicate floral image. With the power of Photoshop, I blended them together, forming a captivating composition. Through multiple prints with a laser printer, the toner buildup on the paper ensured a bold transfer onto the gel plate.

Merging Worlds on the Gel Plate: Where Magic Happens

Enter the gel plate. With just two layers, I was able to create this piece. The textured background using the floral image sets the stage, while the second layer reveals the intricate interplay between the hooded figure behind the window and the cat bridging realms of isolation and connection. The word "ALONE" is also printed onto the background layer, which now appears as a wall behind the hooded man.

Adding Depth and Emotion: Infusing Life into the Print

Once both layers were pulled, I needed to enhance the depth and emotion, so I employed the use of Copic markers. These versatile tools allowed me to add a range of hues that perfectly complemented the mood and symbolism of the composition. Cracks emerged on the walls, both inside and outside, unveiling the fragility of our surroundings. Meticulously applied faux-texture brought the piece to life, inviting a tactile experience for the viewer.

The Power of Contrast and Reinterpretation: Redefining the Narrative

In the final stages, I sought to challenge perceptions and provoke contemplation. Through vibrant red acrylic paint, I struck through the word "Alone" printed on the wall, giving new meaning to the artwork. The once solitary figure found companionship in the presence of the cat outside the window, inviting viewers to reinterpret the narrative and explore the complexities of human connection.

In conclusion, antique visuals are given new life and a fresh interpretation. Embracing the use of copyright-free images provides an invaluable tool to overcome creative block. When the creative wire between your hands and your brain encounters a kink, there is always a workaround.
